Do I have Whiplash? How long till the pain goes away?

Chiropractic and Whiplash.

If you were involved in a car accident, you most likely suffered a whiplash type injury. Multiple factors contribute to the severity of your injury as well as duration of care needed and the likelihood of permanent damage.

The scary thing is, often the pain doesn't start right away. Worst than that permanent damage is not that uncommon.

Often patients think that they have not been injured after a car accident. They  might feel some stiffness maybe an ache or two. Then 2 weeks later you wake up and can barely move your neck, or you find you are have constant headaches, or worst. If you have closed your case, you are left paying the bill or worst, suffering with the problem for the rest of your life!

Whiplash Symptoms Can Include

  • Neck pain and stiffness (often in the front of your neck too)
  • Headaches, often at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Emotional upset- from fear, to crying to anger, unexpectedly
  • Speech changes
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Memory problems
  • Concussion
The first thing we will address is Types of collisions: ( It does not really matter if you were the driver or the passenger. Criteria does not consider loss of consciousness, the use of seat belts, shoulder harnesses or other factors).

Type I   Primary rear impact (struck car moving or stationary) Type II  Primary side impact Type III Primary frontal impact Other:    Multiple Impacts, Rollover, Spinout etc.

Road conditions as well as the size of both cars is a contributing factor as well. Having played football in school, I can tell you, I would much rather get tackled by someone weighing 150lbs than someone that weighs 250lbs.

The first thing that your doctor needs to do is access the severity of your injury. There are 5 grades of severity of injury :

Grade I:   Minimal; No limitations of motion or ligamenetous injury, No neurological findings Grade II:  Slight; Limitations of motion no ligamenetous injury, no neurological findings
Grade III: Moderate; Limitations of motion; some ligamenetous injury, neurological findings may be present.
Grade IV: Mod/severe; Limitations of motion; ligamenetous instability; neurological findings present. Fracture or disc derangement
Grade V:  Severe; requires surgical management/stabilization

Typical Frequency and Duration of Care in Whiplash Injuries

                     5x/w       3x/w       2x/w          1x/w       1x/mos.        TD                    TN

Grade I        1w          1-2w       2-3w          <4w nbsp="" span="" w="">
Grade II      1w          <4w mo.="" nbsp="" span="" w="">
Grade III     1-2w       <10w mos.="" nbsp="" span="" w="">
Grade IV     2-3w       <16w nbsp="" prn="" span="" w="">
Grade V       Surgical stabilization necessary–chiropractic care post-surgical

Again often patients do not feel the severity of their injuries in the beginning or they think it will go away by itself.  They do not get the care that they need, and close their case. Then years later, you wake up and can barely move your neck, or you find you are have constant headaches, or worst. If you have closed your case, you are left paying the bill or worst, suffering with the problem for the rest of your life!

If you have been involved in a car accident, you most likely suffered a Whiplash type injury.
Research shows that left untreated, you most likely will end up with some type of permanent damage. Don't wait till it is too late, Get checked today!

When will my whiplash pain go away?

Whiplash injuries can result in serious permanent damage. It is extremely important that the treating physician is up to date with the latest research as well as treatment protocols. This will not only help the patient recover as soon as possible but with the least amount of residual damage as well.

Whiplash symptoms from a car accident can cause you pain right away. But pain and symptoms sometimes can take 10 days to even 8 weeks before you feel them. This can make whiplash complicated to support from an insurance standpoint. Often patients think they are not injured after a car accident because they do not have any symptoms or  they are " a little sore" after the accident. Then 2 weeks later you wake up and can barely move your neck, or you find you are have constant headaches, or worst.
Whiplash Symptoms Can Include
  • Neck pain and stiffness (often in the front of your neck too)
  • Headaches, often at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Emotional upset- from fear, to crying to anger, unexpectedly
  • Speech changes
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Memory problems
  • Concussion

So, how long will my symptoms last?

In order to answer that we need to look at a few things. The first is the severity of the injury.  Dr. Croft, one of the leading researchers in the field, found that there are 5 Grades of Severity of Neck Injuries:

Grade 1: Minimal limitation ROM

Grade 2: Slight limitation ROM, no neurological findings.

Grade 3: Moderate limitation ROM, some ligamentous injury and neurological findings.

Grade 4; Moderate to Severe limitation ROM, ligamentous instability, neurological findings or disc derangement

Grade 5: Severe, requires surgical treatment and stabilization

Most researchers agree that for grade 2 and below symptoms can last up to 12-14 weeks without proper care and often result in some form of permanent damage. With corrective chiropractic care symptoms typically show a 80% reduction by week two of care, and are stabilized within 8-10 weeks with minimal residuals.

Grade 3 almost always results in permanent damage without corrective chiropractic care. With care symptoms show significant reduction within 2-3 weeks with resolution usually within 12-16 weeks.

Grade 4 again, symptoms reduced within 2-3 weeks, stabilization within 14-18 weeks with chiropractic care. Residual disabilities are anticipated.

Whiplash Treatment Guidelines

 Whiplash Treatment Guidelines

Whiplash injuries can result in serious permanent damage. It is extremely important that the treating physician is up to date with the latest research as well as treatment protocols. This will not only help the patient recover as soon as possible but with the least amount of residual damage as well.

Secondly, it is important that the treating physician be able to document the injuries that the patient has received.
Remember, that proving your injury to the insurance company is the responsibility of your doctor. In their eyes, if it is not written down, it did not happen. Insurance companies do not want to pay you anything!

One of the great things about Barton Chiropractic in Concord is our doctors are highly trained on Whiplash injuries. We offer what we believe is the finest care available. We will not release a patient until we can confirm and have documented that we have indeed corrected their problem. This along with our attention to detail with case documentation allows you to not only get better as soon as possible with the least amount of permanent damage but also receive the largest insurance settlement possible for your damages!

Some of the best research to date on the effects of car crash injuries was done by Dr. Art Croft. He is a rare scientist who cares more about the victims of accident cases than the insurance companies. No researcher has worked harder or done more original research with actual car crash studies.

Dr. Croft's has developed Treatment Guidelines designed to 'measure' the seriousness of the injury. Research has shown that the stage of the injury should be a big factor in dictating the treatment protocol. Here is a sample of his formula :

Dr. Croft recognizes four Stages of Injury:

Stage 1: acute inflammatory 0 - 72 hours
Stage 2: repair 72 hours - 14 weeks
Stage 3: remodeling -- 14 weeks -
Stage 4: chronic and permanent

Equally important is the severity of the injury. Not only is it important to know what stage the injury is in but how severe the injury is as well. Dr. Croft found that there are 5 Grades of Severity of Neck Injuries:

Grade 1: Minimal limitation ROM

Grade 2: Slight limitation ROM, no neurological findings.

Grade 3: Moderate limitation ROM, some ligamentous injury and neuro findings.

Grade 4; Moderate to Severe limitation ROM, ligamentous instability, neuro findings or disc derangement

Grade 5: Severe, requires surgical treatment and stabilization

Never before has there been an easier way to not only get out of pain, but stay that way! Our highly trained doctors are experts at detecting and correcting subluxations that have resulted from auto accidents.

Do I have Whiplash?

Probably.

Research has shown that even low impact "fender benders" can result in whiplash injuries and lead to permanent damage.

If this is your first car accident and you have never had an car accident injury, I am sure you are currently a bit shocked by how much everything actually hurts, and how difficult it is to do normal daily activities.

Brain Injury and Whiplash

Before we go any further, please know that some of the whiplash symptoms above are more serious than others.

If you or someone you love has been in a serious car accident and has these or other odd or worrisome symptoms:difficulty concentrating
  • memory problems
  • speech disturbances (stuttering, forgetting words, misplacing words)
  • or severe personality changes
...it's very important for you or your loved one to call us immediately. Sometimes during a car accident, the whipping motion to the head can also cause mild and occasionally severe brain injury. You do not need to be diagnosed with a concussion to have brain injury symptoms. The brain can become injured when it hits the inside of the skull during a car accident. Real and lasting damage can happen without a person hitting their head.
If you have been involved in a car accident, you most likely suffered a Whiplash type injury.
Research shows that left untreated, you most likely will end up with some type of permanent damage.

Whiplash Symptoms and Chiropractic

In the past typical whiplash injuries, where no bones were broken, were hard to document. Soft tissue injury didn't show up on normal x-rays/radiographs and insurance companies would deny coverage. Literally adding insult to injury. The patient suffering all too real pain was considered to be a fraud, a liar, or at best a hypochondriac.

At Concord Chiropractic , we excel at not only detecting and correcting injuries that have resulted from car accidents but in documenting them as well. As a result of our expertise in documenting injuries, we rarely have the "usual problems with insurance companies". In fact we have very little problems with insurance companies. This is one of the many reasons that Bay Area attorneys refer so many patients to us.

You may have other whiplash symptoms than simply pain from your accident.

  • Neck pain and stiffness (often in the front of your neck too)
  • Headaches, often at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Emotional upset- from fear, to crying to anger, unexpectedly
  • Speech changes
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Memory problems
  • Concussion

Never before has there been an easier way to not only get out of pain, but stay that way! Our highly trained doctors are experts at detecting and correcting subluxations that have resulted from auto accidents.

Auto Accidents, Insurance Claims, Accident Attorneys

Car Accident, Car Accident Attorney, Car Accident settlement

As a victim under California law, you may have the right to a settlement. ( Click Car Accident Settlement for more details).  You have the right to make decisions concerning your case, including whether to accept or reject any offer of settlement.

You do not need to get a car accident attorney in most cases, although they will make it much easier. Just make sure that you do not make these common mistakes: Auto Accident Claim Mistakes .

Make sure that you document your case well. This includes your injuries. Remember, if it is not documented it did not happen. This is why it is so important that you find a chiropractor that not only understands the injury mechanics involved in whiplash, as well as, how to document it.

Finding the right doctor can be huge! Your case as well as your future health depends on it.

For over 26 years, the doctors at Barton Chiropractic in Concord have been recognized as experts in med-legal health care. This is probably why so many attorneys from all over the state refer their clients to our office for whiplash reconstructive care.

How much money is my car accident claim worth?

What is the Value of my Car Accident Claim?

The value of your car accident claim is not a simple question to answer. In general, personal injury claims involve two major elements:

   1) The actual damages and damages for pain and suffering which include items like past and future medical expenses, lost wages, and damage to property. Actual damages are determined by reviewing documentation such as receipts or bills, and calculating the time you missed from work or potentially the reduction in your future earning capacity as determined by your doctor.
2) Pain and suffering is much more difficult to determine and will largely depend on the severity of your injuries as perceived and documented by your doctor.

Not all doctors are created equal. While most chiropractors will do a fairly good job at getting you out of pain, not all have the skill to truly detect and correct your problem structurally. Of the doctors that can truly correct your problem, not many have the training in properly documenting your injuries in a manner that will help build your case.

At Barton Chiropractic in Concord, our highly trained doctors are experts in whiplash type injuries. Dr. Barton has over 26 years experience in detecting, correcting and documenting every aspect of your injury. This is one of the reasons that so many attorneys from all over the state refer their clients to our chiropractic office for care.

If you have been involved in a car accident, you may have suffered permanent damage from a whiplash type injury. Do not let an insurance company take advantage of you.

Seatbelt Use

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among those age 5-34 in the U.S.1 More than 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers were treated in emergency departments as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2009.2 Adult seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes.3 Yet millions of adults do not wear their seat belts on every trip.

Children and Injuries

Many times parents seek care for their injuries but forget about their kids. Children are thought to be more resilient, but this is not always the case. Car Crash injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States.

Many of these deaths can be prevented. Placing children in age- and size-appropriate car seats and booster seats reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half. If your child has been involved in a car accident, do not wait for them to develop serious problems. Get them checked today!

Hit By a Car While Walking?

Barton Chiropractic in Concord helps hundreds of people each year. Many have been hit by cars while they were trying to cross a street. Damage as you can imagine is usually very severe resulting in permanent injuries and sometimes death.
In 2010 alone, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, and another 70,000 pedestrians were injured. This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 2 hours, and a pedestrian injury every 8 minutes. Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash on each trip.

If you have ever been involved in a pedestrian car accident, you are well aware of the pain and suffering that is involved. Insurance companies just do not seem to understand that even a slow impact of 5mph can result in major problems. Having played sports I can tell you that getting hit by a 250lb linebacker vs my 10 year old son is huge.

If you have been involved in an accident you may have injuries that could result in permanent damage. Dont wait till it is too late. Visit our website Car Crash Specialist, or call our office to schedule a free consultation with one of our specialist at 925 685-2002.

Accident Settlement, Injury Lawsuit

car accident lawsuit

As a Chiropractor for over 26 years, I have had the opportunity to help hundreds of people that have suffered auto accident injuries. Even the smallest impacts can leave lasting damage that is often not seen for many years. Chiropractic can correct the damage and minimize the amount of permanent damage that a patient will have to live with. This video shows just how severe the damage  can be.                                                          Chiropractic however, is not about auto accidents or pain relief. Chiropractic is the detection and correction of vertebral subluxations.
Our bodies are self healing organisms that when functioning at 100% should be able to heal on their own. When  our bodies suffer trauma, it is possible to move a vertebrae out of place. This mal positioning can cause pressure on the involved nerve. This pressure will decrease nerve function and result in decreased bodily function. Chiropractic removes this interference allowing the body to heal itself, often preventing future degenerative changes.
Car Accident Whiplash

Unfortunately, sometimes patients are more concerned with "how much money they can get" and not their health. This is sad . It really is impossible to put a price on your health. A huge lawsuit settlement will never take the place of a lifetime of pain , suffering, sickness, and disease.

If you have been involved in a car accident, you may have suffered permanent injuries. The only way to know for sure is to see a Chiropractor and have them perform a thorough examination. At Barton Chiropractic in Concord, there is never a charge to sit down and talk to a doctor about your condition. If you would like to schedule a free consultation with one of our doctors call 925-685-2002 now!

Car Crash Injury With vs Without Seatbelts.

Even low impact car crashes can cause injury.                                                                                                         But if your a dummy and not wearing a seat belt, not only are you breaking the law, you are more likely to suffer a serious injury.                                                                                                      Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50%.

As a Chiropractor, our office helps hundreds of people that have suffered whiplash as a result of car crashes. Our  Chiropractic  Doctors have spent hours researching and studying the effects of whiplash type injuries. Seatbelts save lives and reduce injuries!

Who doesn't wear seatbelts?

Adults age 18-34 are less likely to wear seat belts than adults 35 or older. (CDC, 2010, unpublished data)  Men are 10% less likely to wear seat belts than women. (CDC, 2010, unpublished data)

What does the law say?

V C Section 27315 Mandatory Seat Belt Law

27315.  (a) The Legislature finds that a mandatory seatbelt law will contribute to reducing highway deaths and injuries by encouraging greater usage of existing manual seatbelts, that automatic crash protection systems that require no action by vehicle occupants offer the best hope of reducing deaths and injuries, and that encouraging the use of manual safety belts is only a partial remedy for addressing this major cause of death and injury. The Legislature declares that the enactment of this section is intended to be compatible with support for federal motor vehicle safety standards requiring automatic crash protection systems and should not be used in any manner to rescind federal requirements for installation of automatic restraints in new cars.

Who is effected?

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among those age 5-34 in the U.S.1 More than 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers were treated in emergency departments as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2009.2 Adult seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes.3 Yet millions of adults do not wear their seat belts on every trip.

What To Do After a Car Accident

As a Chiropractor in Concord, we help many people that have been involved in car accidents.

1) Be prepared

concord chiropractorThe first thing really is what to do before an accident.  Keep a copy of your insurance information and a pen and paper in your car; it will make the post-accident process much easier. You are required by law to have proof of your insurance with you, and insurers provide cards that carry all of your relevant insurance information.

2) Stay Calm

Things can get a little crazy after a collision. Tempers can flare. People get scared. Just remember to stay clam.

3) Safety first

Step away from the accident. Before you start gathering information from the other driver after a crash, it's important to get to safety as quickly as possible. Once you and the other driver have gotten to safety you can assess the situation.  If you had a minor fender bender, you don't have to leave the cars where they are. You can move them off the road.

4) Before you move anything.....

Get the other drivers information. Take a pictures of:
-  the license plate of the other car
-  the accident
-  their drivers license
-  registration

Do not forget their contact info. Phone number, email.
You also should get names and contact info of any witnesses.

4)  Get information from the police officer if one is on the scene:
  • Name
  • Badge or ID number
  • Phone number
  • Police report number
Ask the police for a copy of the accident report. It may take up to a couple of days before it is filed. The officer's opinion of the accident will be useful if the drivers have a dispute about who was to blame. The police report will also have the officer's information on it in case the officer is needed to testify.
5) Contact your insurance company as well as dmv.
6) Do not admit guilt. This is for the experts to decide.
7) Pain or no pain see a chiropractic doctor as soon as possible.
Many times symptoms do not show up right away. Left untreated whiplash type injuries can lead to permanent damage. Chiropractors specialize in early detection as well as correction of these type of problems.

How Long Will Whiplash Symptoms Last?

How Long Will Whiplash Symptoms Last?

If you have never had an auto accident injury, I am sure you are currently a bit shocked by how much everything actually hurts, and how difficult it is to do normal daily activities. Well I have some good news for you and some bad news.

First the bad news; you are probably going to feel more pain, before you feel better. The good news, there are things that you can do to help decrease the time that you are in pain. The sooner you see a specialist the better your chances are for a full recovery, and the faster you will heal. How long will it take? That depends.

The problem with whiplash

The problem with whiplash is that very few doctors truly understand it. Well meaning emergency room physicians, general medical doctors, and physical therapist do not appreciate the extent of the pain and injuries whiplash injury victims suffer. The end result is these people often provide inadequate treatment to care for the injuries. Do Not Let This Happen To You!

At Barton Chiropractic in Concord, we truly understand the pain you are going through.

Your soft tissues, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and muscles were stretched, strained and sprained
maybe even torn during this trauma. And strangely, these soft tissue injuries often will take longer to heal than if you had broken bones. To make matters worst, they often heal with scar tissue, and often in the wrong place.

Minor Car Accident

Even minor accidents can cause serious whiplash symptoms. Your car is slightly damaged or in some cases shows no noticeable damage, and you have pain that may arrive 10 days - too two weeks after your accident. With this type of accident, you can expect up to 3 months to heal with proper care.

Medium Accident

This is an accident where there is significant damage to your car, sometimes even totaled. You may have been taken to the emergency room, and your pain may be immediate or up to show up 10 days to 2 weeks after your accident. Expect 3 to 6 months to heal and even with the correct care you may end up with some permanent damage.

Serious Accident

In this type of accident your car is heavily damaged, often totaled, and you are always injured, you may have lost consciousness, or suffered a concussion. Expect 6 months to a year to heal. You will most likely have some permanent damage with even the best care. Without care the prognosis is poor.

Severe Car  Accident

In this accident you usually need surgery, you leave the accident site in an ambulance, and unfortunately there are often fatalities in this level of accident. The healing of this accident for your medical care, may take a year or more. This accident can also leave very serious emotional scars, you may find that psychological counseling eases some of your pain and trauma. It goes without saying, if you were involved in an accident of this nature, extended care is going to be indicated.

The following is a guide that shows approximate care indicated for different levels of injury. This is just a guideline, but it will give you an idea of what you can expect.

Brain Injury and Whiplash

Before we go any further, please know that some of the whiplash symptoms are more serious than others. If you or someone you love has been in a serious car accident and has these or other odd or worrisome symptoms:
  • difficulty concentrating
  • memory problems
  • speech disturbances (stuttering, forgetting words, misplacing words)
  • or severe personality changes
...it's very important for you or your loved one to call us immediately. Sometimes during a car accident, the whipping motion to the head can also cause mild and occasionally severe brain injury. You do not need to be diagnosed with a concussion to have brain injury symptoms. The brain can become injured when it hits the inside of the skull during a car accident. Real and lasting damage can happen without a person hitting their head.

It is important that you do not ignore any symptoms that may indicate an injury to the brain. Do not accept that you are depressed. If the first doctor does not take you seriously, make sure you continue to search for a doctor who will exam your brain injuries and help you find a solution.

If you have been involved in a car accident, you most likely suffered a Whiplash type injury. Research shows that left untreated, you most likely will end up with some type of permanent damage.

Whiplash Test

Whiplash - Car Accident Injury

The most common whiplash symptoms are pain and stiffness in your neck and upper back. If you try to bend your chin to your chest, or if you try to look straight up above your head and this causes or increases your pain, you probably have whiplash. Whiplash from a side impact can make it painful to tilt your head to your shoulders. Often the muscles in the front of your throat are strained too.

You may have other whiplash symptoms than simply pain from your accident.

  • Neck pain and stiffness (often in the front of your neck too)
  • Headaches, often at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Emotional upset- from fear, to crying to anger, unexpectedly
  • Speech changes
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Memory problems
  • Concussion

I always recommend keeping a simple notebook or journal of your symptoms. These notes will help us as your doctors and therapists give you the best care possible. But, it is also important for your case. In a year from now when you are asking the insurance company to reach a financial settlement with you your documentation of your injuries and your pain right now, will help your attorney get the best settlement for you possible.
